In Spring 2007 we purchased our first saddleback pigs from Riddings Park Farm in Ashbourne (see their website at :- http://www.farmcraftholidays.co.uk/ ). They were 'weaners' being about 10 weeks old. This was a complete venture into unknown territory for us, never having had anything to do with pigs before. They have been a complete joy to own, and are the most fasinating creatures to watch..... they really can move mountains of earth with their noses! and in the evenings they have wonderful games of chase round their paddock.....they are much more intelligent than cows or sheep, and have an amazing vocabulary, they are constantly talking to each other. Having enjoyed looking after them all summer and knowing I have reared very contended pigs, I was equally excited to try our first home grown pork and bacon.......it was truly delicious, I mean completely different from watery supermarket stuff.....this was just a revelation! . If you would like to try some of our home produced pork products please just get in touch. We do bacon, sausages, hams to order and of course pork joints and chops. Just in case you didn't know......Commercially reared pigs never see outside, never get a chance to root or express their natural behaviour, they are reared indoors on concrete, in cramped pens in their thousands. They are fed a mixture of chemicals and over-processed high-protein feed to maximise growth rate with minimum fat. They lead short miserable lives and unsurprisingly produce equally miserable meat.
