Cornhill Cottage is a traditional stone built croft cottage which was extended in 1985. It stands on the crest of  a little used loop road about 200 yards above the Talmine post office. There are dwelling houses scattered along the Kyle-of-Tongue, and there is one small cottage directly behind Cornhill; apart from the latter there are no immediate neighbours.

There are fine views out to sea, and to Rabbit and Seal Islands at the entrance to the Kyle of Tongue. Two of Sutherland's most famous mountains - Ben Hope and Ben Loyal - are within easy reach.

The area is most suitable for those interested in natural history - it is an ideal place for the hill walker, ornithologist or botanist, or for those who are seeking a peaceful relaxing holiday amidst magnificent scenery.

The village of Tongue is approximately five miles away on the other side of the Kyle. It has two hotels,  a gift shop, a hairdresser's and a bank. There is also a very well stocked general store, Burr's Of Tongue, they really do seem to supply practically everything, including petrol. This is the only petrol source for some miles.

The Post Office, which is just down the road from 'Cornhill' (about 200 yds) is the only local shop. Mr. & Mrs. Tom MacKay,  the proprietors, stock a wide range of good quality fresh and frozen foods including meat and  fresh vegetables, toiletries and other cleaning materials, plus all the normal PO facilities. It is open Monday - Saturday 9am to 5pm and is a very friendly village meeting place.

There is a fish seller once a week outside the Post office who sells a wide variety of good quality fresh fish. Fishing trips can sometimes be arranged from the Post Office, or from either of the two hotels in Tongue. Fishing permits are also available  from the hotels in Tongue.

Boat trips to the islands can sometimes be arranged from the Post Office. The nearest of the islands - Rabbit Island - is well worth a visit. In the spring and early summer there are lovely flowers and butterflies and many nesting sea birds, including Puffins. There are often seals basking on the beaches on the north east side.

We have seen otters along the coast, and a Pine Marten in the woods. The call of male Eider duck in Spring is delightful to hear.
