Slow Grown, Grass Fed Beef Calves are purchased from neighbouring farms, or we buy Hereford cattle from a local breeder based up on the Roaches. They spend two summers grazing the fields, only brought inside when winter really sets in. They are 'finished' off grass between 24 - 30 months old. We use a small family run local abattoir which is only 15 minutes drive away, therefore throughout their whole lives they will have spent less than 30 minutes travelling.... compare that with the poor beasts you see being transported up and down the motorways, or abroad in huge lorries. How far has the meat you buy in the supermarket travelled? it's hard to find out. Our first 2 calves were purchased in July 2005 at 2 weeks old, this is them in November 2005
The live calf export trade opened again in 2006 so many UK born calves go abroad to intensive rearing units in Holland and Belgium...... not so for the little Aberdeen Angus heifer pictured below!
