There are many lovely, clean, sandy and often deserted beaches within a few minutes of the cottage.

Along the north coast there are numerous places of interest: Cape Wrath, Smoo Cave and Loch Eriboll to the west, and to the east Strathnaver (with it's folk museum and nature reserve), Strathy Lighthouse, Dounreay Power Station and spectacular headlands and coast line all the way to Thurso in Caithness. Beyond Thurso there are : Dunnet Head, the furthest point north on the Scottish mainland: The Castle of Mey, the late Queen Mother's residence and of course John O'Groats  - which offers many tourist attractions.

Thurso, the nearest town, is about 45 miles away. It takes an hour and a half to get there as the road is single track with passing places for some of the way. This does not mean it's a rough track!....it is an 'A' road. Thurso is an attractive town and a good friendly shopping centre. The Caithness landscapes and buildings are quite different from those of Sutherland.

Castletown, beyond Thurso, is developing a small museum to show the working and export of stone flags from these parts.
